Discover Music Technology

Technology has altered music making forever. Your learning with Keyquest Music will benefit from the latest technology, and if you are interested then you can also start to get to grips with using music software yourself.

Within instrumental teaching this is extreemly useful, as Andrew uses state of the art equipment to assist pupils' progress as musicians:

  • by making recordings of their playing so that they can listen back and evaluate the quality of their performance

  • by recording demo performances of new pieces and sending them to pupils/parents as MP3 files or posting them on this site

  • by using Sibelius notation software to produce sheet music and additional resources for pupils, including theory sheets and teaching resources

  • by recording pupils finished performances and producing CDs for them

Andrew has advised schools about the use of music technology in the classroom, and is available for teacher training and support in this area.

Andrew is familiar with a wide range of music software applications, including Cubase, Sibelius, Sonar, Reaper, Ableton Live, Tracktion and others.

However, he specialises in Propellerhead Software's Reason, Record and ReCycle applications, and is available for workshops, courses and one-to-one training in these applications. His Studio is based around these applications, which he uses for all his composing and music production. He also uses the latest versions of Sibelius for notation and Audition for audio editing and mastering.

Why Propellerhead Software?

Propellerhead Software's Record and Reason are simply the best, most suitable applications for educational purposes. Unlike Cubase, Logic and others, Propellerhead's Reason and Record don't simply replicate the type of software used in recording studios worldwide, but also the actual hardware used by musicians and recording engineers. Simply by pressing the TAB key on your PC or Mac computer you can swivel all the hardware devices round and patch cables in the rear of devices, exactly as you would in a studio. Students who learn about music technology this way using Reason thus learn how to use real-world music and recording equipment in a studio.

Record and Reason also offer a level of stability not found in any other music software. Put bluntly, nearly all music software contains bugs and is liable to crash, especially if you are running the software on an older or less powerful computer. Propellerhead maintains a unique level of stability in their software by keeping it a closed environment and providing everything you need within the core application itself, so that there is no need to spend extra cash buying plugins that may not always even work well. This all means that the user experience is far more productive, with a focus firmly on the music itself instead of frustrating troubleshooting.

Beyond education, Reason and Record are of course well established professional applications used widely in studios and by musicians on stage and for recording and writing. Artists who use Reason come from a wide range of musical backgrounds, from Massive Attack to Jean Michel Jarre, from the Black Eyed Peas, to Mike Oldfield, to The Prodigy. Reason has not only established itself as the leading industry standard music software for hip hop production, but is also a staple in Film Composing and TV. Check out the Artist Section on the Propellerhead Software website for a range of videos of world class producers and artists who use Reason.
